Mt. Antero

Here are a few pics from climbing Mt. Antero on Saturday October 12, 2002.

On the summit of Mt. Antero. The route I took is the green one on the left of the map. I took the obvious gully south of the switchbacks around 11,500' on the green route.  I ascended the gully, continued up by crossing the ing the green route, and rejoined the  blue route.  I followed the blue route to the summit.
From the top of Mt. Antero, you can see the Great Sand Dunes National Monument in the distance.  It appears to be a hop, skip, and a jump away, but to drive there would take 3 hours. The mountains behind the sand dunes include Little Bear, Blanca, Mt. Lindsey, and Ellingwood.
Snow is coming early this year.
I spent the night at Ken Krehn's excellent cabin near Buena Vista. It is situated in the valley between Mts. Antero and Princeton overlooking Chalk Creek.  The next day I drove over Tincup Pass to Taylor Reservoir then turned around and came back via Cottonwood Pass.
A cool church in cool trees in cool Buena Vista.
